The Combustion Drive is a technology that allows the construction of Small Cargo and Large Cargo ships, Light Fighters, Recyclers, and Espionage Probes. All ships (Large Cargo, Recyclers, et al) still using Combustion Drive will have their Base Speed increased by 10% for every level (as an example, at Combustion Drive level 9 Large Cargo will have a speed at 14250 and Recyclers should travel at 3800.)
After upgrading to level 5 of the Impulse Drive, the base speed of small cargo ships doubles, and they proceed to use the impulse engine instead for speed upgrades.
